Find Federal Prison Releases

To find someone released from Federal Bureau of Prisons custody after a case connected with Lewis County, use the national federal locator and the federal court record. BOP covers sentenced federal prisoners, not ordinary county bookings, Idaho prison sentences, or immigration detention. Its historical results can report a release date or show that a person is no longer in BOP custody. That status has a precise limit. The person may still be under federal supervised release or held by another system. Match the register number, court case, and agency before treating a federal result as the answer.

Federal Prison Release Scope

The Federal Bureau of Prisons operates federal institutions nationwide. No BOP prison was identified in Lewis County. A local arrest does not make a case federal, and a departure from a county jail does not prove BOP intake. Look for a federal prosecution, judgment, register number, or confirmed transfer before using the federal locator as the main source.

BOP's locator covers federal inmates from 1982 to the present. A result may show a location, release date, “Released,” or “Not in BOP Custody.” Those last labels mean only that BOP no longer holds the person. State, county, immigration, parole, or supervised-release status remains separate.

Federal limit: A BOP release result ends the BOP custody question, not every custody or supervision question.

Search Federal Prison Releases

Open the official BOP Inmate Locator. A register number is the strongest key. The tool also accepts DCDC, FBI, or INS numbers and supports a name search with demographic refiners.

  1. Use the number search when a federal identifier is known.
  2. Otherwise enter the exact name and available age, race, or sex refiners.
  3. Read the register number, location or status, and release date.
  4. Compare the identifier and sentence with the federal court case.
  5. After release, check whether supervised release or another custodian remains.

A pre-1982 federal sentence may not appear. A negative name result is inconclusive when names or identifiers are incomplete.

The official locator source should be opened live because locations and dates can change.

Federal Release Date Meaning

BOP says its projected release date reflects federal time credits already earned and applied. A separate conditional calculator is for planning and is not the actual displayed projected release date. First Step Act recalculations can change the locator date, so preserve the check date.

Federal rules should not be copied onto an Idaho sentence. IDOC uses Idaho judgment and sentence fields, and a county jail uses its booking and court record. Each system answers a different custody question.

Projected release date
BOP's current estimate with applied federal credits.
Released
The person is no longer in BOP physical custody.
Supervised release
Federal court supervision after prison.
Detainer
Notice that another agency may seek custody.

BOP Records and Contact

The locator is the public starting point. Formal proof may require BOP movement or release records and the federal docket. A focused request identifies the register number, full name, federal case, and date range. The sentencing court supplies the judgment and supervision terms.

For a Lewis County inquiry, establish federal jurisdiction first. The Lewis County release search separates county, state, federal, and immigration routes.

USMS Versus BOP Custody

The U.S. Marshals Service manages federal pretrial prisoners through release, acquittal, or delivery to BOP after conviction. People may be held in contract jail space. There is no comparable public historical Marshals locator. The USMS custody overview explains that role.

Use the federal docket and order for a pretrial release. After sentence and BOP designation, use the BOP locator. Absence from BOP before designation does not prove community release.

Federal Transfer Is Not Release

If a Lewis County holding jail transfers a person to the Marshals Service or BOP, obtain the movement time and destination. That event changes custodians without proving community release. An ICE transfer is also separate from BOP and uses immigration channels.

Lewis County lies within Nez Perce Reservation geography, which can raise jurisdiction questions, but geography alone does not establish federal custody. Identify the charging court and agency. State only what the matched federal record proves.

Note: Save a federal release result with its register number and check date because a projection can change.

Confirm Federal Release Proof

A useful federal proof packet contains the dated BOP result, register number, federal judgment, and any order governing supervised release. If the locator says Released or Not in BOP Custody, state that narrow fact. Do not convert it into a claim that no other agency holds or supervises the person. Follow any known detainer or transfer destination.

If a result appears wrong, preserve it and send a focused inquiry to the custodian. Compare the register number rather than relying on a common name. The federal court explains the sentence, while BOP records prison movement and the custody endpoint. Record the exact locator wording and date. A later change can then be compared with the saved result without overstating what either snapshot proves.
